My name is Hugh Duval, the face behind TheTyroAcademic! I am an aspiring historian looking to build ‘my own little corner of the world’ where I can showcase some of my upcoming more professional work.
Professionally, I left Bath Spa University in 2020 with Bachelor of Arts in History having written my dissertation on ‘The Life of the Fleet Air Arm in the Pacific Theatre During the Second World War (1941-1945)’. During the COVID-19 pandemic I chose to productively use my time and further my education with a Master of Science at the University of Birmingham, leaving a year later in 2021. It was here I chose to specialise in Global Cooperation and Security. My degree was a good opportunity to blend my historiography and political science skills, culminating this degree with the thesis study: ‘Paradigms and Problems: The Role of Europe’s Behaviour Trends on Diplomatic Discourse prior to and during the July Crisis (1815-1914)’
In my own time alongside these studies, I also took up what is undoubtedly my largest hobby which is photo restoration and colourisation. I thus set up my page ColourisationsByHugh on instagram, which I’m proud to say has a humble following of just shy of 10,000 people. Since 2021 I have spent my time building a part-time career in the Royal Naval Reserve but on the back of returning from operations in late 2025 I am now eager to turn my attention back to a life of academia.
